DON'T use the following concepts for your septic tank system:

  • Out of sight, out of mind

  • If it ain't broke don't fix it

  • Properly working septic systems never need to be pumped

These are all ways you DON'T want to take care of your septic system. The most IMPORTANT thing you CAN DO for you septic tank system is to maintain it. Depending on the size and usage most systems should be cleaned out every 3-5 years. Some of the smaller tanks may even need to be pumped every year. A properly working septic tank system is the most effective way to treat sewage. Everytime sewage enters the septic system it works. Evertime water is used, sewage enters the septic system and an equal amount of water leaves the system. It is important to conserve water usage. Excessive water use, in a short perior of time can over load the septic tank system. If it is time to replace appliances, consider new ones that conserve water. Currently, front load washers use the least amout of water of any on the market. They use 40-65% less water than top load washers. Minimize chemicals going into the septic system. The following is a list of those chemicals:

  • Antibacterial Soap

  • Drain Cleaners

  • Don't Use "Every Flush" Toilet Bowl Cleaner

  • Use Low Phosphate (0-5%) Dishwasher Soap

  • Use minimum amout of soap possible

  • Use laundry detergents that do not contain phosphate or bleach

  • Use recycling channels to dispose of solvent, antifreeze, paints and chemicals. If these items enter the septic tank ssytem the will kill usefull bacteria in the septic tank.

Reroute water softner and iron filter recharge water outside of the septic system. This water does not need treated through the septic system. Painting? Don't let wash water from paint brushed and rollers enter the septic tank system. Route water from geo-therm units outside of septic system. It doesn't need treated either. Hair and lint are top causes for leach and drain fields to fail. They are not biodegradeable, therefore causing the field to plug. Consider installing a washer filter. If interested in a washer filter, we have more information and the washer filters available. Distribute wash loads evenly throughout the week to avoid overloading the septic tank system with large amounts of water.
